Australian researchers win neuroscience awards

Nine emerging Australian researchers in the neuroscience field have been awarded research grants by Pfizer Australia totalling more than $400,000.

An Australian Physicians Independent Committee (APIC) determined the winning NSR grants for proposals for basic and clinical research across the broad field of neuroscience, including but not necessarily confined to psychiatry, pain medicine and neurology.

The Awards were made at an event in Sydney on Friday 27 July 2007. The winners are:

  1. Dr Paul Wrigley of the Pain Research Institute of the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, for studies in the structural alterations of the human brain following complete spinal cord injury in people with and without neuropathic pain.
  2. Dr Cameron Lacey of the University of Melbourne, for a Tasmanian epilepsy register mood study.
  3. Dr Natasha Brown of the University of Melbourne for a family and community study of the genetics of autism spectrum disorders.
  4. Dr Janette Vardy of the University of Sydney, for the characterisation of cognitive impairment in colorectal cancer patients.
  5. Dr Sophie Adams of Royal Melbourne Hospital, for a study of neurological imaging and neuropsychiatric outcomes associated with epilepsy.
  6. Dr Phyllis Chua of Monash University, for a study of the integrity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in Huntington’s disease.
  7. Dr Dayan de Fontgalland of Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide,for a study of the sensory innervation of human colonic mesenteric and submucosal vessels.
  8. Dr Chong Wong of Westmead Hospital in Sydney, for a study of positron emission tomography in refractory partial epilepsy.
  9. Dr Noojam Kazemi of the University of Melbourne, for an analysis of seizure spread patterns in subtypes of temporal lobe epilepsy.
